Short Bio
Christoph Wirth is a Berlin-based sound designer, composer, media artist and theatre director. With his label OBLIQUE SENSATIONS, he creates hybrid works spanning sound art, (post-)immersive XR environments, performance and theatre.
Combining textual, musical and choreographic approaches with (post-)conceptual strategies and code, he designs liminal spaces that interrogate, and "augment", human perception and social interaction as they become entangled with machinic and autopoietic dispositifs. His works explore the fragile ecologies between the actual and the virtual, (co-)presence and absence, form and shadow, and touch on fantasy production, imagination, contingency and mortality.
His compositions merge spectral and microtonal techniques with drone, ambient and popular forms, and explore the intersections of text-based art forms such as radio art and spoken theatre with 3D audio environments.
In 2024, he was artistic researcher and principal investigator at Jeffrey Shaw's Visualization Research Centre (VRC) at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he led a project on group-dynamic interaction in immersive audiovisual environments. He was a 2021 fellow of the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund and has held residencies at ZKM Karlsruhe, PACT Zollverein and Nida Art Colony, among others.
His work has been commissioned and presented internationally at MeetFactory and Studio Hrdinů (Prague), JOIN Oper Stuttgart, Theater Dortmund, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Berliner Festspiele/Immersion, CAC Vilnius, VRC Hong Kong, Theater an der Ruhr, Next Level Festival 2025, Nordic Performing Arts Days, Treibstoff Theatertage Basel and Actoral Marseille, among others.
