QUEUE
completedCollaborations

SummaryMedia artist, director and composer Christoph Wirth and his team explore questions of collective behaviour patterns and their influence on the future. In QUEUE, the audience can enter an interactive, audiovisual environment in virtual reality and change it through their movement patterns and decisions. The result is an immersive, group-dynamic installation with game and radio play elements, inspired by Samuel Beckett's prose text ‘The Lost Ones’.

A cooperation of Academy for Theatre and Digitality and the Theater Mülheim an der Ruhr in collaboration with OBLIQUE SENSATIONS (Christoph Wirth)
QUEUE is a participatory XR experience for multiple participants. Inspired by Samuel Beckett's novella The Lost Ones, which depicts an eerie world shaped by endless queueing, QUEUE's virtual landscape is both a game and and a mirror to a collapsing (capitalist) reality. But what is "real", and what is a memory of a disappearing past?
How does it work?
Six people at a time can enter QUEUE's environment via VR-headsets. Inside, they take on the roll of avatars trapped in an oversized, eerie cylinder. Individually, in pairs, or in groups, the players can experiment with different ways of escaping the cylinder - if that's even possible.
QUEUE combines elements of a multiplayer game with the atmosphere of a radio play and a drone concert, all within an immersive environment. The result is a virtual space in which audiences can experiment with individual agency, group cooperation, and the uncanny logic of hybrid worlds.

OBLIQUE SENSATIONS is a Berlin-based label for media, performance and sound art, as well as experimental music theatre. Under the artistic direction of Christoph Wirth, Oblique Sensations creates interdisciplinary work through collaborations at the interface between analog and digital, and between scenic, social, and virtual spaces. The label develops immersive XR and VR experiences, as well as hybrid performative installations, interactive sound installations, staged concerts, and conceptual art for both stage and gallery. A particular thematic focus is the exploration of technological history, the politics of perception and attention, and forms of collectivity and affect.
